Wisdom-Oriented Education in School Practice
From Theory to a Flourishing Life
This book presents wisdom-oriented education as a response to key challenges facing contemporary schools: information overload, disinformation, social polarisation, a crisis of meaning, declining well-being among young people, and the growing tendency to delegate thinking to technology, including generative artificial intelligence. Its aim is to connect scientific theories of wisdom with pedagogical and pastoral practice. The theoretical section discusses Paul Baltes’s Berlin Wisdom Paradigm, Robert Sternberg’s balance theory of wisdom, and Monika Ardelt’s Three-Dimensional Wisdom Model. A subsequent section examines the figure of homo delegans, the risk of losing cognitive agency, the need for the judicious use of AI, and the role of diversity as a source of learning and broadening perspectives. The core of the book comprises an extensive set of exercises suitable for use in subject lessons and pastoral sessions. These address, among other areas, the analysis of values, conflicts and dilemmas; perspective-taking; critical evaluation of information; recognition of manipulation; reflection on contemporary social issues; and the development of generativity, understood as care for others and future generations.
The book argues that fostering wisdom does not require a separate school subject, but rather the deliberate design of educational situations in which knowledge is connected with meaning, responsibility and the practice of living well. It is intended primarily for teachers, form tutors, educationalists and parents.
