Niniejsze studium oferuje krytyczną ocenę twórczości historyka kościelnego Sozomena (Salamanes Hermias Sozomenos, ok. 370-ok. 450), którego „Historia Ecclesiastica” jest ważnym źródłem do dziejów Kościoła chrześcijańskiego za panowania dynastii Konstantyna i Teodozjusza. Analizuje ono jego życie, karierę i kontekst historyczny, przedstawiając nowe dowody na datowanie jego dzieła i argumentując, że pozostało ono niedokończone po jego śmierci. Książka sytuuje Sozomena w tradycji historiografii kościelnej ustanowionej przez Euzebiusza z Cezarei, porównując jego prace z pracami wcześniejszych historyków Kościoła, podkreślając jego wyjątkowy wkład w ten gatunek i podkreślając jego biblijną inspirację, a także powiązania z pogańską historiografią grecko-rzymską. Poprzez wnikliwą analizę kluczowych postaci, takich jak Atanazy z Aleksandrii, Konstantyn Wielki i Jan Chryzostom, książka zgłębia niuanse i często ambiwalentne podejście Sozomena do władzy cesarskiej i ortodoksji chrześcijańskiej. Cyril Adrian Francis Chilson (b. 1962) is an instructor in Biblical Hebrew at Blackfriars Studium, Oxford, and a historian of late antique Christianity. His work focuses on late Roman and early Byzantine Christian cultural history, especially Greek ecclesiastical historiography. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Oxford where he was a Junior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall. He completed his doctorate at the University of Łódź (supervisor: prof. Sławomir Bralewski). His research explores church–state relations and political theology in the Byzantine Empire, the interaction between Byzantine Christian denominations and ethnic identity, as well as Patristic and Byzantine biblical exegesis.
