Synopsis

Autor przedstawia kwestię języka i wielojęzyczności w odniesieniu do coraz bardziej wielokulturowych społeczności. Omawia nie tylko rolę języków w podróżach, pracy czy migracji w globalnym świecie, lecz także w kształtowaniu tożsamości. Pokazuje ponadto, że wielojęzyczność może prowadzić do konfliktów społecznych i politycznych, nierównych stosunków władzy i dyskusji na temat języków narodowych lub urzędowych, a nawet do walk o prawa językowe społeczności lokalnych i tubylczych. Czytelnik znajdzie tu również przegląd losów wielu zagrożonych języków, które znikają ze świata, oraz rozważania dotyczące przyczyn rozwoju lub upadku języków.

Author Biographies

John C. Maher

John C. Maher profesor lingwistyki na Międzynarodowym Uniwersytecie Chrześcijańskim w Tokio. Był wykładowcą studiów azjatyckich na Uniwersytecie w Edynburgu, wykładał także w British Council na Filipinach oraz w St. Antony’s College na Uniwersytecie Oksfordzkim. Jest autorem English as an International Language of Medical Communication (University of Michigan Press, 1992), współredaktorem Multilingual Japan (Multilingual Matters, 1995, wraz z Kyōko Yashiro) oraz współautorem Introducing Chomsky (ICON, 2005, wraz z Judy Groves). Redaktor „Studiów Edukacyjnych” i dyrektor programowy Linguapax Asia.

Weronika Szubko-Sitarek

Weronika Szubko-Sitarek anglistka i językoznawczyni. Jej zainteresowania naukowe dotyczą przede wszystkim wielojęzyczności ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wielojęzycznego przyswajania i nauczania. Pełni funkcję koordynatorki specjalności nauczycielskiej w zakresie filologii angielskiej na Wydziale Filologicznym UŁ. Promuje rozwijanie świadomości i umiejętności komunikacyjnych w kontekście wielojęzycznym oraz zrozumienie korzyści, jakie wynikają z wielojęzyczności. Jej badania skupiają się na zrozumieniu złożoności procesów wielojęzycznych, tożsamości językowej oraz wpływu wielojęzyczności na edukacyjne aspekty życia.
