The main objective of this monograph is to characterize the legal and institutional environment of the European Union (EU) financial markets in the process of sustainable transformation of the European economy and to assess the functioning of EU countries' financial markets in this area. The publication also includes an analysis of the conditions for implementing non-financial reporting requirements in the area of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) by public companies in the EU, and a description of the functioning of ESG indices and ratings.

The relevance and uniqueness of this publication stems from the subject matter addressed. Although sustainable development is a major challenge of our times, issues related to sustainable finance in a broad sense are relatively rarely addressed in the literature. Most studies focus on "green" finance and environmental issues. A particularly significant information gap concerns the role of sustainable finance in sustainable development. Without a financial sector that understands the challenges of sustainable development and acts on its behalf, it is difficult to imagine a sustainable economic transformation. A similar situation applies to the corporate sector, where some companies are already required to prepare non-financial reports. These reports provide information about their impact on internal and external stakeholders, summarized as the integration of ESG factors into their operations. Although the ESG acronym is becoming increasingly recognized, knowledge on the subject remains unsystematized and fragmented.
