The monograph considers the notion and scope of senior policy vis-à-vis similar policies, such as social policy on ageing, social policy on old age, and social policy on the elderly. Although retirement policy is unrelated to senior policy, it is also covered in the monograph because of its influence on the financial situation and well-being of the elderly and older adults. A brief review of the demographic situation and main population trends in EU-28 countries is followed by a presentation of senior policies in Hungary, Poland and Russia, and the impact of their retirement policies on the economic situation of older people.

Bogusława Urbaniak, University of Łódź, Faculty of Economics and Sociology, Department of Labour and Social Policy

Bogusława Urbaniak is a professor of economic sciences. She has been a member of staff at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology at the University of Łódź for over 40 years. Her scientific and research interests encompass labour market economics, social policy and HRM, and the multidimensional determinants of the activity of older people, especially their labour market activity. She has authored over 200 publications, reports and expert opinions, including papers on the socio-economic aspects of population ageing in Poland. She is a member of international research teams for EU projects, which have recently included Age Management Uptake (AMU), Active Ageing through Social Partnership and Industrial Relations in Europe (ASPIRE), Wsparcie aktywności zawodowej osób 50+ w przedsiębiorstwie. Zdrowy i zmotywowany pracownik (Supporting the Occupational Activity of People aged 50+ in the Organisation. A Healthy and Motivated Worker (STAY)). She is also a member of the EAST Network of the Oxford Institute for Population Ageing, and an expert on employment for AGE Platform Europe, the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Labour and Social Policy Studies, the Polish Society for Social Policy, and the Polish Society of Gerontology.

Yaroslava Evseeva, Russian Academy of Sciences, Centre of Scientific Information Studies in Social Sciences, Department of Sociology

Yaroslava Evseeva is a sociologist and culturologist. She graduated from the Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow (having studied the theory and history of culture). She has worked for over 10 years at the Department of Sociology of the Centre of Scientific Information Studies in Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, as a researcher and editor of the journal ‘Sociology’. Her main speciality is the sociology of ageing. Her scientific interests also include: the sociology of childhood; the sociology of family; the sociology of health and illness; gender studies; and cultural studies. She is a member of the Sociology of Aging Research Committee of the International Sociological Association and the EAST Network of the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing. She has published over 20 articles, in Russian and English, mostly devoted to aspects of the sociology of ageing, as well as age stratification, social solidarity, mass culture, etc. She is currently working on her PhD thesis on the concepts of successful ageing (history, state of the art, criticism, future perspectives).

László Patyán, University of Debrecen, Faculty of Health, Department of Gerontology

László Patyán is a sociologist and social worker. He obtained his master’s degree in social work in 1998 and a PhD in sociology in 2018 at the University of ELTE. The title of his thesis was: The System of Relationships between Professional and Family Caregivers in the Home Care of the Elderly People. He has worked for 25 years at the University of Debrecen in the Faculty of Health. Currently, he is an associate professor at the Department of Gerontology. His research interests are elderly policy, care policy, the quality of life of older people, and the social exclusion of older people. He is a member of AGE Platform Europe the Hungarian Sociological Society, and the EAST Network of the Oxford Institute for Population Ageing. Former project activities include: Innovation, Job Quality and Employment Outcomes in Care (researcher) (QuInnE.eu). Ongoing project activities: ROSENet COST ACTION Reducing Old-Age Social Exclusion: Collaborations in Research & Policy, Social Services Expert Group (2016–2020).
