Between Illusion and Dream. The Fatalism of Love in the Life and Work of John Brzechwa
The poet primarily known as author of lyrics for the youngest readers privately was focused on the
love to women and the work he loved. His poetry, novel When The Fruit Ripens and Dramatic Stories
contain a lot of autobiographical memories. The author of The Lyrics Of My Life was, like the characters
in his poems, in a constant state of falling in love. Love for the third wife was compared by Brzechwa to
the obsession of a madman, stressing that he was in love amok to the extent that they did not notice the
Second World War. Also in the lyrics Brzechwa`s love is a feeling of a great power, but usually unreciprocated,
which the lyrical subject is in position of expectant, begging for affection outlaw. A lyrical subject
appears to be a fatalist, „sadist of dreams” as a client trying to sneak into the thoughts and dreams of
lovers, mainly in order to find in them a confirmation of their fatal delusions. Unable to possess her heart,
constantly swarming its capture or severe revenge. Dreams intended therapeutic power, as they give, as
opposed to actual events, according to create the representations. To get the beloved outlaw grabs also
spells, curses and charms, trying to win the powers of enchantment in esoteric and numerology.
