Dark Afterlife in Stnisław Grochowiak’s Poetry Based on Volume Gooseberries
Vanishing and death always was in the middle of Grochowiak’s interests, research about them are
usually based on analysing biological aspect of death. However his poems concerned also afterlife.
The article considered pictures of afterlife in Stanisław Grochowiak’s poetry. Research showed that
in poems of Grochowiak not only bodies but also souls stays on Earth. They influenced alive people and
were influenced by them. Grochowiak’s vision of afterlife was incoherent. Article analysed variety pictures
contained in volume Gooseberries: Banko, The Widower, The Dream.
Grochowiak had no doubts — there was no paradise, people after death stayed alongside everything
that was next to them during life. Real death would come when there would be nothing connected to
dead man in the world of living people. Death can also be a source of life what happens in Dream. Fire
at the cemetery creates there new life.
Afterlife still takes place on Earth, paradise and hell are myths. Those areas are parallel however do
not cross. That was why contact between dead and living people was impossible.
