“A Dream is Better — There is no Death in it”. Trances, Visions, Nightmares in Jerzy Pilch’s Prose
This article represents a pioneering attempt to formulate the fundamental subject of Jerzy Pilch’s
prose, that is dreams, illusions, visions etc. Even if these phenomena do not make up a constructional axis
(like in the novel March Polonia), they appear regularly, i.a. as old Protestants’ “prophet” views, alcoholic
dreaming in The Mighty Angel, oneiric atmosphere of Many demons or discursive thoughts on a dream in
feuilletons and Diary. Making a comparative analysis as well as referring to Jung’s conception, the authoress
of this text shows that it is not only about an element characterising a depicted world nor plot’s ornament,
but also about key question for ideological purport of Pilch’s prose. In the article, it is considered, if a reader
can find a common denominator for the “domain of phantoms” (a term from March Polonia), and it is
indicated in a dream and narration’s connection as a suspension of the power of death.
