AI tools in academic practice
Supporting and assessing thesis writing
Downloads
The book examines use of artificial intelligence tools in academic practice, with particular attention to the process of writing a thesis. Its starting point is the view that the wide availability of large language models is changing the conditions in which university teaching operates, and that this calls for renewed reflection on the purpose of the thesis and on the skills it is meant to demonstrate. The authors argue for a critical assessment of how the model of education is changing, and of where the boundary lies between using a tool for support and allowing it to replace the author's own work.
The theoretical part of the book presents definitions and types of artificial intelligence, the foundations of machine learning, and the origins and operating principles of large language models. The main weight of the argument, however, rests on the authors' own studies, whose results are difficult to regard as neutral for the academic community. The first study reveals the actual extent to which AI is present in the practice of those writing theses, and shows how quickly it has moved from the margins to the centre of the research process. The second research verifies whether an experienced academic can identify a text generated by a language model. Comparing the respondents' answers with the actual authorship of the passages they assessed leads to conclusions that undermine confidence in intuitive methods of verification and provide a basis for recommendations addressed to universities, supervisors and students.
