The main goal of this article is to demonstrate that – in spite of the published descriptions – the place of the stress in Polish can have, in special conditions, a distinctive function. In the realization of borrowings from foreign languages which have a similar phonetic construction to native or completely assimilated ones it can happen that two words differing only in the place of stress appear in the system. The distinctive function can also appear, being even more evident, in syntagmatic constructions, where it is a result of delimitative function of the place of stress.
