Lodz in the Polish People's Republic. The Polish People's Republic in Lodz

5 Titles

The books in the series combine the narrative of grand politics with the history of everyday life. The authors of volumes present readers with the dramatic fate of Lodz and its residents right after WWII, during the Stalinist period, Władysław Gomułka's repressive socialism, the decade of Edward Gierek's consumerism, and finally – the turbulent period of the 1980s. The series concludes with the so-called "The Carnival of Solidarity" and the martial law period, as well as the final collapse of the socialist "command and control" economy. The series allows younger readers to familiarize themselves with the recent history and confront it with stereotypical notions about the Polish People's Republic. It also serves as a testimony to the functioning of society in the political realities prevailing in the Eastern Bloc from 1945 to 1989.
